riteSCAN Product Update

February 2008 Release:  The next release of riteSCAN will be available for download in February.  This update will include some exciting new features including the latest riteSCAN function, Backflushing.

riteSCAN PackageBackflushing
You use the Backflushing function to record the manufacture of items without using a Work in Progress job. This enables you, in one process, to issue the materials from inventory, apply standard labor costs, and receive the finished good back into stock.

riteSCAN Web Service Change
Our customers have asked for an alternative to installing the riteSCAN Web Service on Microsoft's Internet Information Service (IIS).  For organizations without dedicated IT staff, installing and configuring Microsoft's IIS can be challenging. The great news is that with the latest release of riteSCAN, IIS is no longer needed. The riteSCAN Web Service now runs on its own high performance web server. After inserting the riteSCAN installation CD, your riteSCAN Web Service will be running in less than five minutes.

Administrative Features
We've added the ability to deny access to specific riteSCAN modules for specific operators in the riteSCAN System Administration application.  This allows administrators to keep an operator from accessing a module they are not allowed to use.

There are other features and enhancements slated for February, including Barcode Printing.

Look to this riteSCAN Product Update article in future issues of the riteSCAN newsletter as riteSCAN advances and enhancements continue.

FEATURED MODULE: Inventory Query

Save Time and Money with Inventory Query
Imagine the time and effort your operators will save when they have instant access to inventory data right from SYSPRO.Inventory Query

With Inventory Query from riteSCAN, all it takes is a quick barcode scan of any stock code and inventory data from SYSPRO is displayed.

Check the on hand quantity against physical inventory, see allocated, in inspection, on order, and on backorder by warehouse and bin.

Eliminate the need to have dedicated staff checking SYSPRO inventory levels for your warehouse operators.  Instead put SYSPRO inventory information at their finger tips with riteSCAN.

The best part of Inventory Query is that it is just a finger tap away from any screen in riteSCAN where a stock code is entered. For example, when picking a sales order using riteSCAN's Sales Order Picking, an operator can run Inventory Query right from the Sales Order Picking screen.  There is no need to close one screen and open another.  That makes Inventory Query easy to use and a real time saver.

Our customers say that Inventory Query alone is worth the price of riteSCAN.

IN THE NEWS: Selecting the "Rite" Mobile Computer
Whether you're thinking about upgrading your existing mobile warehouse or just getting started on the road toward warehouse automation, there's never been a better time to invest in mobile computing.

One of the great things about technology is as time goes on, prices continue to decrease while available features and performance continuously improves. This is certainly the case with RF (Radio Frequency) based mobile computers. With so many devices to choose from and so many options available, selecting the best hardware for your organization can seem complicated and confusing.  In this article we'll present an overview of the various hardware options available today and provide some practical tips on how to get started down the road to warehouse automation.

Two Types of Computers
There are basically two types of units to consider for automating data collection in your warehouse: handheld units and tablet PCs. Defining these two categories is the first consideration to be taken because it clearly divides the field from the outset.

Ruggedized Tablet PC
The ruggedized tablet PC is similar to wireless touchscreen tablet PCs used by business managers and office workers with one important difference.  Unlike office-capable tablet PCs, the ruggedized version is built to military specifications and designed to operate in harsh environments.  The ruggedized tablet PC can be mounted to a forklift or cart, attached to a fixed docking workstation, or simply carried by the user.

The ruggedized tablet PC has a larger screen than a handheld unit. The screen looks very similar to a laptop screen and the ruggedized tablet PC runs a full version of Windows XP.  A major difference between a standard laptop and a tablet PC is that the tablet PC's screen can be used as an input via touchscreen. With touchscreen and handwriting recognition, the ruggedized tablet PC does not require a keyboard or mouse.  Ruggedized PC

The ruggedized tablet PC typically uses a separate barcode scanner device that connects via USB cable.  Generally the scanner attachment is a gun type or a pen wand style.

In summary, if most of the data collection will take place while the operator is working on a forklift or within a fairly limited area, the ruggedized tablet PC can be a great option.  If the operator needs to spend a good amount of time walking around, the bulkier, heavier, ruggedized tablet PC may not be the best option.

Handheld Mobile Computer
As the name implies, the handheld mobile computer is designed to be carried by the operator.  The typical handheld computer is small and light and can be worn on a belt and carried by the operator for an entire shift.
Symbol Handheld Mobile Computer

Handheld mobile computers come in a wide variety of forms from PDA-sized non-ruggedized units (great for light duty use and maximum mobility) to sturdier, fully-ruggedized units that can be used outdoors and in very harsh environments.  Most handheld mobile computers have a built-in scanner and can be configured in a gun form where scanning a barcode is a matter of pointing the device at the barcode and pulling a trigger.

Unlike a ruggedized tablet PC running Windows XP, the handheld mobile computer runs the Windows Mobile operating system specifically designed for a smaller screen size, lack of full sized keyboard, and reduced computing power.

In summary, the handheld computer is a great choice if your operators need greater mobility and will be scanning information as a primary part of their job.  If an operator's work area is on a hard surface like concrete or in a harsh work environment, consider a ruggedized unit to prevent damage from drops, dirt, and moisture.

Getting Started
With an idea of which types of devices will work best for your organization, the next step is to talk with a hardware expert.  You will save a great deal of time and effort with a little help from a company familiar with the various options.  Talking with a mobile computing expert can help you:
  • Gain a better understanding of your needs.
  • Understand what is involved in implementing wireless mobile computers in your warehouse.
  • Avoid spending money on features and functions you don't need.
  • Promote your mobile warehouse initiative within your organization.
We have business partnerships with several hardware experts and are happy to help you find the information you need.  For more information you can visit us here or contact us at ritescan@rte-inc.com.
